In this week’s video, Coach Durba from the University of Maine talks about what he looks for when recruiting high school hitters.
Coach Durba is a big proponent of the leg kick; he wants to see a player that has a great gather and consistently puts good swings on pitches.
Another key is to look confident and mean when you are in the box. If you have some swagger in the box and are confident in your abilities, you will be open the eyes of a lot of coaches.
Coach Durba usually signs about 90% of his recruiting class during the early signing period and are typically not getting verbal commitments from freshmen and sophomores; they would rather wait and see how a player develops before making that early of a decision.
Not only do you need to be a good hitter to play at the next level, but you also need the grades. You are making it harder for yourself to get recruited if you don’t have the GPA to back up your play on the field. So make sure you are spending just as much time in the classroom as you are in the batting cage!
