In this week’s coaching blog, out of our Baseball Coaching Academy, Oklahoma University Head Coach Pete Hughes talks about what he looks at with his young infielders: energy and tempo.
If a player lacks either of these things, Coach Hughes will not recruit them. The next thing he looks at is athleticism, specifically their footwork. His favorite drill with his young guys when they first get on campus is to have his players field the ball coming towards the person hitting the fungos.
He wants them getting used to coming at the baseball no matter what the tempo is and only allowing them to use their glove hand improves their hand-eye coordination.
