When it comes to questions about college baseball recruiting, they can all be boiled down to one – How do I (or my son) find the best college baseball program FOR ME? There are a lot of options out there, and a lot of high school players who have “dream schools” where they would love to play. The problem comes when you’ve never stepped on the campus of that “dream school”, never talked with the coaches at that school, never asked the players how they feel about that program, never looked into the academic requirements, and so on and so forth. It’s impossible to know if a college baseball program is a good fit for you without doing some homework. Should you prepare for the high school baseball draft? All of these points and everything else you need to know about the recruiting process are discussed in complete detail in NLB’s Baseball Recruiting Corner.
Here today to share great tips on how to find the right college baseball program is University of Virginia assistant baseball coach, Matt Kirby. Coach Kirby played and then coached at University of William and Mary and then moved on to coach and recruit for VMI, Brown, Villanova, Georgetown and now the prestigious baseball program at University of Virginia. For you guys that follow college baseball, you know that UVA is a perennial top 25 school that went deep in the 2011 College World Series. Many thanks to Coach Kirby for doing this interview with NLB and going into detail on how players and parents can find a college baseball program that best fits them. The volume isn’t the greatest on this video, so I included words on the screen to outline all the main points. Here is a list of the highlights that Coach Kirby and I discuss in detail in the video interview below:
- Find a list of schools that fit you athletically and academically
- Do your research about those schools
- Visit those Schools
- Get to know the baseball program
- Talk to the players
- Get to know the coaches and their coaching styles
- Find out the general daily routines for players in each program
